The Coalition of Unpaid Teachers, led by National Organiser Eugene Zoranu Segbefia, has announced plans to launch an indefinite protest on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the Ministry of Finance if the government fails to outline a clear plan for paying their outstanding salaries.
In an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, Segbefia revealed that some of the teachers in the coalition have been without pay for as long as 18 months. He expressed frustration, saying, “We have teachers who have worked anywhere from seven to 18 months without pay. As of now, we still don’t know whether the government intends to fulfill its obligations to us.”
Despite engaging with high-ranking officials, including the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service and the Minister for Education, the teachers say they have yet to receive any firm commitments or a timeline for payment. “The Minister listened to our concerns and promised to expedite the process. We were informed that a memo was sent between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, but now we’re seeing new recruitment happening while we, who are already teaching, have not been paid,” Segbefia added.
He also raised concerns about what he views as the government’s misplaced priorities. “Why recruit new teachers when those of us already working haven’t received any pay? It’s unfair,” Segbefia said.
The National Organiser also pointed out the disparity in treatment between teachers and other public sector workers. He referenced the recent payment of arrears to nurses, questioning why teachers are not receiving similar consideration. “We went through similar processes as the nurses, yet they’re getting their arrears this April. Are we not providing essential services to this country?” he asked.
Having given the government until April 12 to present a payment plan, the Coalition is now escalating their protest actions. “Tomorrow, April 15, we’re taking to the streets. And we’re not leaving until we have a resolution,” Segbefia warned.
The group has made it clear that they are seeking direct engagement with either President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President, or the Chief of Staff. Failure to meet with these leaders will result in the continuation of their protest.
Segbefia further revealed that the coalition members are prepared for a long-term protest, including camping out at the Ministry of Finance. “We are coming with our belongings. Some of our colleagues are travelling from Kumasi and Tamale. We’re prepared to sleep at the Ministry of Finance until we get a concrete payment plan. This is the last step we will take.”
