Ghana’s creative arts industry is mourning the death of veteran actress Grace Nortey, popularly remembered for her powerful roles in Ghanaian theatre, television and film. She died at the age of 89.
Veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Nortey has passed away, bringing to an end a remarkable career that spanned more than five decades in the entertainment industry.
Reports indicate that the actress died in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).
Grace Nortey became one of Ghana’s most recognised actresses, especially during the golden era of Ghanaian television and drama. She was widely known for portraying strong, outspoken and commanding female characters, earning her the nickname “Maame Gyata.”
She featured in several popular productions including “Obra,” “Osofo Dadzie,” “Key Soap Concert Party,” “Cantata,” “Taxi Driver” and other television and film projects that shaped Ghana’s creative industry.
Her contribution extended beyond local productions, as she appeared in internationally recognised films including “Sinking Sands” and “Beasts of No Nation.”
Throughout her career, Grace Nortey received recognition for her contribution to the arts, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Black Star International Film Festival.
Her passing has left colleagues, fans and members of the creative community mourning the loss of one of Ghana’s acting legends.
