Former Ghana defender Sam Johnson believes it will take a miracle for the Black Stars to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The team has struggled in their qualifying campaign so far, managing only two points from four matches, which includes two draws and two losses.
Currently, Sudan is in a better position, sitting second in the group with seven points. This makes Ghana’s path to qualification look quite challenging.
In discussing the team’s prospects, Johnson expressed his doubts about their chances of qualifying for AFCON. He suggested that it might be more beneficial for the team to focus on preparing for the 2026 World Cup instead.
“If we manage to qualify for AFCON, it would truly be a miracle,” he told Graphic Sports. “Right now, we should concentrate on the World Cup and work on improving our organization. If we somehow make it to AFCON, I would be both surprised and happy.”
Looking ahead, Ghana will finish their qualification campaign next month with a match against Angola, who have already secured their spot in the tournament. They will then face Niger, who are currently at the bottom of the group, in a home game at the Accra Sports Stadium.
