The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs has called on religious leaders across Ghana to actively participate in the fight against child labour and trafficking. Speaking during a dialogue with various religious bodies, the Minister stressed the influential role that faith leaders can play in shaping societal values and mobilizing communities for change.
The event, which took place at the Fiesta Royal Hotel in Accra, brought together Reverend Ministers, Imams, and other faith leaders to explore strategies for ending child exploitation in the country. The Minister also commended organizations such as the International Justice Mission for their dedicated efforts in protecting vulnerable individuals and upholding the rule of law.
Child labour and trafficking remain significant challenges in Ghana, with approximately 2 million children engaged in hazardous work, according to the 2021 National Population and Housing Census. The Minister outlined the government’s ongoing initiatives to enforce laws, strengthen social welfare services, and implement poverty reduction programs aimed at tackling the root causes of child exploitation.
Religious institutions have been called upon to:
Preach against child exploitation
Promote children’s rights and dignity
Support victims and collaborate with authorities to prevent abuse
The government, in partnership with stakeholders like the International Justice Mission, is intensifying awareness campaigns and working to shift public attitudes toward child labour and trafficking.
