The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a case that has sparked widespread public concern.
The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was picked up on Sunday, June 15, 2026, during a targeted operation by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team in Cape Coast.
Police say the arrest followed intensive intelligence-led investigations after the disappearance and subsequent death of the Level 200 student.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly had contact with the deceased on June 11, 2026. He is believed to have picked her up from the Ayensu Plaza area within the UCC hostel enclave at about 6:48 p.m. on the day she was last seen.
Authorities also revealed that the suspect, who reportedly identifies as a teacher and works as a commercial driver, was arrested at around 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast.
The arrest follows days of search efforts after the student was declared missing by her family and colleagues. Her body was later discovered on a beach in Cape Coast, prompting public outrage and renewed calls for justice.
In a statement, the Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest and assured the public that investigations are ongoing. The Service said detectives are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and gather evidence for prosecution.
Police added that further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
The incident has reignited concerns over student safety in tertiary institutions, with many calling for stronger protection measures and swift justice for the deceased student.
