The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government’s ambitious Free Primary Healthcare initiative will cost the public purse approximately GH¢1.15 billion annually.

This initiative, set to be officially launched by President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, aims to eliminate financial barriers to essential healthcare services at Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, health centres, and polyclinics across the country.

The free primary healthcare services will target preventive and curative healthcare, ensuring that Ghanaians, especially those in underserved communities, have access to vital health services without the burden of cost. The move is part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen the healthcare delivery system and improve access to healthcare services for all citizens.

The Ministry of Health believes this initiative will have a transformative effect, particularly on rural and peri-urban populations who often face significant financial challenges when seeking medical care. By absorbing the cost of these services, the government aims to reduce the number of individuals who forgo treatment due to financial constraints, ultimately improving health outcomes across the country.

The official launch of the programme will be a significant milestone in the government’s healthcare reforms, as it aligns with broader goals of expanding access to healthcare, enhancing preventive care, and reducing health inequities.

This move also positions the government as a key player in providing equitable healthcare services to Ghanaians, further strengthening the health sector and ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of quality healthcare.
