The Minister for Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, is set to meet with the leadership of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) on Thursday, April 16, to address concerns over the newly implemented Publican AI system at Ghana’s ports. This follows a wave of protests sparked by a sit-down strike on Monday, April 13, initiated by freight forwarders and clearing agents in response to the system’s rollout.

The operators have raised objections, claiming that the implementation of the Publican AI platform has been insufficiently consulted and lacks clarity, leading to uncertainties about its impact on port operations and trade facilitation.

GUTA Vice President Joseph Paddy, speaking after a meeting with the Ghana Shippers Authority, revealed that the association has called for a temporary suspension of the system until further discussions with the Ministry of Transport take place.

“We’ve expressed our concerns and requested the suspension of the system for now,” said Paddy. “We were assured that the Minister is aware of the situation, but since he is currently away, we’ve been told to wait two more days for the meeting.”

The Publican AI system, which aims to enhance the efficiency and transparency of import clearances, has been met with opposition from industry stakeholders who are calling for more comprehensive consultation before its full implementation.
