Ernestina Ofori Dangbey, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, has filed a defamation lawsuit against veteran broadcast journalist Paul Adom Otchere, seeking GH¢20 million in damages. The legal action is in response to comments made by Adom Otchere on his television show, Good Evening Ghana, on March 24, 2026.
The lawsuit, filed at the High Court in Accra, claims that the MP’s reputation was severely damaged by the remarks made during the broadcast. According to the writ of summons, Ofori Dangbey is seeking general damages amounting to GH¢20,000,000.00 (Twenty Million Ghana Cedis) for the harm caused to her personal and professional standing.
The controversy stems from a broadcast in which Adom Otchere allegedly accused the MP of pressuring the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to remove Miss Golda Andam, the Headmistress of Swedru Secondary School (Swesco). The defendant reportedly claimed that the MP sought the headmistress’s removal due to her refusal to admit 52 students with “impossible grades” and for preventing the MP from hosting a political rally on school grounds. During the program, Adom Otchere further described Ofori Dangbey as “dangerous to democracy” and displayed her photograph on screen.
In her statement of claim, the MP strongly denies the allegations, calling them “factually inaccurate” and “malicious.” She argues that the broadcast has caused her significant public scandal, ridicule, and contempt, leading to irreparable harm to her political career and personal dignity.
Reliefs Sought:
In addition to the GH¢20 million in damages, Ofori Dangbey is demanding:
An unconditional retraction and a full apology, to be published prominently across all platforms used by Adom Otchere.
A court order for the removal of all defamatory content from the internet.
A perpetual injunction to prevent Paul Adom Otchere or his agents from publishing similar defamatory statements in the future.
