On Ideal 96.7FM’s Ghana Wonsom Show, Sam Johnson on Black Stars: “Teamwork and Leadership Key to Victory”
On Ideal 96.7FM’s morning show Ghana Wonsom, hosted by BIC Abeiku Okai, former Ghanaian footballer Sam Johnson shared his thoughts on the current state of the Black Stars and their upcoming AFCON qualifier against Sudan. Known for his blunt insights, Johnson offered a candid assessment of the team’s preparations and what it would take for them to succeed.
Speaking on the issue of Black Stars’ camping ahead of crucial matches, Johnson expressed concerns about the team’s practices, particularly their decision to camp a night before the game. According to him, such last-minute preparations reflect deeper issues within the system, which in turn, affects the team’s performance. He emphasized that the current situation cannot solely be blamed on the players, but also on the leadership of the team and the overall football system in Ghana.
Despite the challenges, Johnson remains optimistic about the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He firmly believes that Ghana will secure a victory in their match against Sudan but stressed that teamwork is key. “Ghana has the talent to win, but we must play as a team to secure victory,” he said.
Johnson also addressed the unique dynamic of Sudan being coached by former Black Stars coach Akwasi Appiah, who is Ghanaian. He dismissed concerns that this might create any conflict of interest or tension between Appiah and Ghana. “The fact that the Sudan coach is a Ghanaian is not a problem,” he explained, adding that the relationship between Appiah and the Ghanaian national team would remain unaffected by the match.
In conclusion, Sam Johnson highlighted that while the Black Stars have a good chance of winning, strong leadership and a cohesive team effort are essential for success.
