PURC Announces Electricity and Water Tariff Reductions Effective April 1
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a reduction in electricity and water tariffs for consumers in Ghana, with the new rates set to take effect on April 1, 2026.
Under the new adjustment, electricity tariffs will be reduced by 4.81 percent, while water tariffs will decrease by 3.06 percent, providing some relief to households and businesses across the country.
According to PURC, the decision forms part of its routine quarterly tariff review mechanism, which considers key economic indicators such as the cedi–US dollar exchange rate, inflation, the cost of natural gas, and the electricity generation mix.
For the latest review, the commission pegged the exchange rate at GH¢11.1931 to the US dollar, representing a 6.78 percent drop from the previous quarter, which contributed to the downward adjustment in tariffs.
PURC also announced the introduction of a new tariff category for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, a move aimed at supporting Ghana’s transition toward cleaner energy and promoting the adoption of electric vehicles.
The commission noted that the tariff adjustments are designed to maintain the financial viability of utility service providers while easing the financial burden on consumers.
The new tariffs will officially come into effect on April 1, 2026, and utility providers are expected to implement the changes accordingly.
