Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Administrator of The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, has revealed that the programme has invested GHS 36,234,475.00 in a specialist training initiative aimed at strengthening Ghana’s healthcare workforce and expanding equitable access to specialised care nationwide.

Speaking during the government’s Accountability Series on Monday, May 11, she noted that the programme’s partnerships will ensure all regions of Ghana benefit from specialist training. Professionals trained through the programme will be required to serve in their local communities, helping to prevent specialised care from being limited to urban areas.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares, currently supports treatment for several non-communicable diseases, including:

Breast cancer

Cervical cancer

Prostate cancer

Childhood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma, soft tissue sarcomas, retinoblastoma, and nephroblastoma

The Administrator further stated that additional disease conditions will be added to the programme’s benefits package by the end of the year.
