A recent report by the Ghana AIDS Commission reveals that every 30 minutes, someone in Ghana contracts HIV/AIDS, totaling 50 new infections daily. Despite the nation’s longstanding efforts to combat the disease, which began in the 1980s, much more remains to be done to meet set targets and raise awareness.
The 2023 national and sub-national HIV and AIDS estimates and projections show that 334,095 individuals are currently living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana, including 17,550 children under the age of 15.
The report highlights that the majority of new infections occur among people aged 15 to 49, the country’s economically active population. In 2023, Ghana recorded 17,774 new HIV infections, with 1,698 cases among children under 15 and 16,076 among adults over 15.
Although the data shows a decline in new infections, AIDS-related deaths, and overall HIV prevalence, the reductions are still insufficient to achieve the country’s health goals.
