Heavy Earthquake Looms in Central Region, NADMO Director Warns

The Central Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has warned of a potential major earthquake in the Central Region, triggered by excessive quarrying in several districts.

Speaking to the press after a three day workshop for NADMO directors in the region, Central Regional Director Mr. Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood highlighted the alarming rate of stone quarrying overtaking parts of the Central Region. He called for immediate action to halt these activities.

Mr. Dawood specifically warned operators in Gomoa East, Awutu Senya East, Awutu Senya West, Gomoa Central, Gomoa West, and nearby mining communities to stop quarrying immediately.

NADMO is preparing to demolish dilapidated structures at risk of collapse and has already begun demolition and drainage drilling in some districts to prevent flooding and other disasters.

He praised the 24 district NADMO directors for their efforts and urged them to stay vigilant for a disaster-free region.

The director noted that explosives used in quarries and mining sites—especially in the Kasoa enclave—pose a “time bomb” risk that could trigger an earthquake at any moment.

NADMO is working to regulate or stop these operations.

Mr. Dawood also cautioned coastal residents against illegal sand mining, announcing a NADMO taskforce to monitor and arrest offenders.

With research predicting heavy rainfall soon, the agency is drilling gutters and conducting public education to mitigate risks.

Stakeholders at the workshop commended Mr. Dawood for organizing the event and urged district directors to apply the lessons learned.

They pledged collaboration to support NADMO’s goals and called on staff to work proactively with the regional director staying alert rather than waiting for disasters to strike.
