Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has revealed that President John Mahama has assured him he will sign the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill once it is passed by Parliament. Bagbin made this statement at an event on April 11, 2026.
According to Bagbin, President Mahama has repeatedly expressed his commitment to assenting to the bill should it pass through Parliament. He urged the public to disregard rumors, emphasizing that the bill is nearing its final stages of approval.
“The President assured me that once the bill reaches his desk after Parliament’s approval, he will sign it into law. He has said this before, and I trust he will keep his word,” Bagbin stated. “Members of Parliament who support this cause have worked tirelessly to promote it, and we are now at the stage where it will soon be passed.”
Reflecting on past challenges, Bagbin also addressed the fact that the bill had previously failed to secure presidential assent, which he believes led to political backlash. “We are determined this time,” he said, referring to the upcoming parliamentary session where the bill is expected to be passed.
The Speaker also reiterated his belief that LGBTQ+ practices are foreign to Ghana’s cultural values and warned against the influence of outside politics. “We are different. Our principles, values, and culture stand strong against this foreign influence. We will not be colonized again,” Bagbin declared.
