Mark Addo, the Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has appealed for tranquility following the controversy surrounding Andre Ayew’s omission from the starting lineup during the Black Stars’ narrow victory over Angola on Thursday.
Ayew, who captains the national team and plays for Nottingham Forest, was left on the bench at the Baba Yara Stadium, causing some consternation.
Nonetheless, Addo defended the decision, stating that there was nothing amiss with Ayew being excluded. “During the World Cup in Qatar, Andre Ayew was substituted, and I see no problem with that,” he said in an interview with Asempa FM, as monitored by Footballghana.com.
“I do not know what precipitated that decision, but I do not see any issue with Chris Hughton’s choice to omit Andre Ayew from the Black Stars squad.”
The chairman of the Black Stars management committee refrained from speculating about the reasons behind the decision, emphasizing that it would be unfair to the technical team and players. “I do not want to speculate on anything because that would be unfair to the technical team and playing body, but I do not think there is anything wrong with that decision,” he added.
Addo’s plea for calm comes as Ghana prepares to face Angola in the reverse fixture of the AFCON qualifiers. The Black Stars will be hoping to secure a win and qualify for the tournament next year.
