On March 24th, the Minority in Parliament opposed the approval of two Supreme Court Justice nominees, Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu and Justice George Kingsley Koomson. The group did approve Barbara Ackah-Yensu and Samuel Adibu Asiedu.
The caucus argued that Justice Gaewu was unfit to be on the apex court’s bench because he had been a parliamentary candidate on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak, suggested that his approval would set a bad precedent, which could lead to similar demands from others in the future.
Regarding Mr. George Koomson, the Minority insisted that there were other competent and qualified justices who could have been elevated to the Supreme Court instead of him.
They also pointed out that he had only recently joined the Court of Appeal.
If the MPs cannot reach a decision, the approval process will be done through a secret ballot.
