The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA), along with the Joint Business Forum, has reaffirmed that the ongoing strike by freight forwarders and clearing agents at Ghana’s ports remains in effect. This clarification follows misleading reports suggesting that the industrial action had been suspended after a meeting with the CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Gyampo.

In a press release issued on April 14, 2026, GUTA stressed that while the forum’s leaders were invited by Professor Gyampo to discuss suspending the strike ahead of an emergency meeting scheduled for April 16, no agreement was reached. The group emphasized that the strike, which began on April 13, is still in full force, with freight forwarders and clearing agents halting their services, ceasing payment of duties, and effectively suspending port operations.

Although the forum agreed to suspend any additional planned actions out of respect for ongoing negotiations, the strike will continue until concrete resolutions are reached. GUTA and its partners—representing freight forwarders, customs brokers, and traders—highlighted ongoing issues such as unpredictable duty assessments, delays in cargo clearance, high demurrage charges, and ineffective dispute resolution systems as the primary reasons behind the strike.

The group described the current business environment as “unsustainable” for traders and industry players. GUTA reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with the government at the scheduled emergency meeting, but reiterated that the strike will persist until tangible solutions are found.

Stakeholders, traders, and the public were urged to disregard any claims that the strike had been called off, as port operations remain disrupted.
