FIFA Rejects Iran’s Proposal to Move 2026 World Cup Matches

Global football governing body FIFA has reaffirmed that it has no plans to alter the official schedule for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite reports that Iran is exploring the possibility of relocating its matches to Mexico.

The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, already has its fixtures and venues finalized following the official announcement in December 2025. FIFA has made it clear that all participating nations are expected to comply strictly with the established schedule.

Reports indicate that Iranian officials have informally raised concerns about playing matches in the United States due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, prompting discussions about the possibility of hosting their games exclusively in Mexico. However, sources close to FIFA suggest that such a move is highly unlikely, citing logistical complexities, commercial commitments, and tournament integrity.

FIFA’s position remains firm: no special arrangements will be made for any team outside the agreed framework. This effectively leaves Iran with limited options  either participate under the existing schedule or consider withdrawing from the competition altogether.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be historic, marking the first time the tournament will feature 48 teams and be hosted across three countries. Any last-minute changes, particularly involving venue allocations, could disrupt years of planning and coordination among organizers, broadcasters, and stakeholders.

While no official withdrawal has been announced by Iran, the situation continues to attract global attention as political tensions intersect with the world’s most celebrated sporting event.
