The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced the annual ban on drumming and noise-making, set to take effect from Monday, May 4 to Thursday, June 4, 2026, within the Ga Traditional Area. In a public notice, the AMA, in collaboration with the Ga Traditional Council, stated that the measure is intended to maintain peace, harmony, and national security in preparation for the upcoming Homowo Festival.
As part of the regulations, churches are instructed to conduct all activities strictly within their premises and avoid the use of musical instruments during this period. Additionally, the ban includes the prohibition of loudspeakers outside churches, mosques, and pubs, while roadside evangelism will also be suspended.
Religious bodies and traditional authorities have been urged to foster mutual respect and ensure that their followers refrain from making derogatory or inflammatory remarks about other beliefs and practices.
In accordance with the traditions of the Ga people, funeral rites and related ceremonies will also be prohibited during this time.
Enforcement of the ban will be carried out exclusively by a task force comprising AMA officials, the Ghana Police Service, and representatives from traditional councils. The AMA has cautioned that no individual or group outside this designated task force should attempt to enforce the ban.
Residents are urged to fully cooperate with the directive to ensure a peaceful ‘Nmaa Dumo’ period.
