1,345 Okada Crashes Contribute to 2025 Road Fatalities in Ghana – NRSA

In 2025, Ghana recorded a total of 2,949 road traffic deaths, with a staggering 1,345 attributed to motorcycle accidents, particularly involving Okadas—the informal motorcycle taxis that dominate urban transportation.

Okadas are a convenient mode of travel, especially in busy cities like Accra and Kumasi. However, the rise in their use has led to a surge in road fatalities, as many riders disregard safety rules such as wearing helmets or following traffic laws. The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has raised alarms, pointing out that these deaths could be prevented with better safety measures, rider training, and enforcement of road rules.

The government has taken steps to regulate Okadas, including attempts to ban them in some areas and enforce helmet laws, but the challenge of enforcement remains. As Okadas continue to play a critical role in Ghana’s transport system, finding the right balance between accessibility and safety has never been more urgent.
