Court Grants GH¢200,000 Bail to Woman Accused of Stealing 4-Day-Old Baby

The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) Circuit Court has granted bail to 33-year-old trader, Latifa Salifu, who is standing trial for allegedly stealing a four-day-old baby at the Mamprobi Polyclinic.

Salifu was granted bail in the sum of GH¢200,000 with two sureties. One of the sureties must provide a justified landed property valued at not less than GH¢150,000. She has been charged with one count of child stealing and has pleaded not guilty.

During proceedings on March 4, 2026, Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, who led the prosecution, informed the court that investigations had been concluded and an amended charge sheet filed. The prosecution sought permission to substitute the original charge sheet with the amended one and to retake the plea of the accused. The court subsequently struck out the old charge sheet and took a fresh plea from Salifu, who maintained her not guilty stance.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, a 29-year-old trader from James Town, delivered her baby through a Caesarean section at the Mamprobi Polyclinic. Due to jaundice, the newborn was later referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

Court documents state that on February 17, 2026, at about 4:00 a.m., a woman dressed in a peach-coloured scrub uniform allegedly approached the complainant’s bed in the recovery ward, observed both mother and child, and left. At approximately 7:00 a.m., the same woman reportedly returned under the pretext of administering medication to the baby but allegedly absconded with the child instead.

Efforts by nurses on duty to locate the suspect within the facility proved unsuccessful, prompting the mother to file a report at the Mamprobi Police Station.
