Unemployed Graduates with Disabilities Threaten Nationwide Protest on March 24
Graduates with disabilities in Ghana have issued a stern warning of a nationwide demonstration on March 24 if the government does not present a clear plan to address their long-standing unemployment issues. This comes after a one-month ultimatum, given on February 9, expired without a concrete response.
At a press conference, Princess Mensah, a representative of the Coalition of Unemployed Graduates with Disabilities, expressed frustration over the persistent joblessness among qualified individuals with disabilities. Despite years of education and sacrifice, many continue to face systemic barriers to meaningful employment.

“Despite our qualifications and readiness to serve, we are still denied the chance to access jobs due to widespread discrimination and lack of support,” said Mensah.
Referring to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Mensah highlighted that approximately 8 percent of Ghana’s population, or about 2.1 million people, live with some form of disability. However, the unemployment rate among them is significantly higher than the national average.
The coalition also pointed to the Persons with Disabilities Act 2006 (Act 715), which mandates employment support systems and offers incentives for employers hiring persons with disabilities. Yet, despite the existence of such legislation, the failure to enforce it has left many qualified individuals sidelined.
Dr. Felix Obeng Asamoah, Executive Director of the Ghana Blind Union, reaffirmed that persons with disabilities are capable and committed citizens, eager for the opportunity to contribute to society. “We are all potential assets, and all we are asking for is a fair opportunity to prove our worth.”
The coalition remains dedicated to peaceful advocacy but has made it clear that the protest will go ahead as planned unless the government responds with a clear and actionable roadmap for employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.
