Organised Labour has praised the government’s decision to absorb increases in fuel prices, calling it a timely intervention that provides relief to workers and the public amidst rising living costs. The government’s move, which involves absorbing two cedis on diesel and 36 pesewas on petrol, comes in response to concerns over the financial strain caused by soaring fuel prices, particularly on transportation and household budgets.
In an exclusive interview with 3news’ Labour Affairs Correspondent on April 16, leaders of Organised Labour welcomed the initiative, describing it as a much-needed response to the economic pressures facing Ghanaians. The decision was made just days after transport operators warned of potential fare increases due to the continuing rise in fuel prices, a move that would have further strained already stretched incomes.
To address these concerns, the Ministries of Finance and Transport held an emergency cabinet meeting, following which President John Dramani Mahama instructed the Finance Minister to explore measures to reduce fuel prices and ease the burden on citizens. Less than a week later, the government announced its fuel price subsidy.
Organised Labour has expressed satisfaction with the immediate impact of the relief, noting that workers across the country are already feeling the benefits. “Workers are relieved by this intervention. It will go a long way to ease transportation costs and general living expenses,” a representative said.
However, while the group acknowledges the positive effects of the measure, they are urging the government to extend the subsidy beyond the initial one-month assessment period. Labour leaders caution that pulling back the support too early could undermine the progress made and reintroduce financial pressure on workers.
“We are appealing to the government not to withdraw the support after the one-month assessment. Consistency is key to ensuring long-term relief for Ghanaian workers,” the representative added.
Organised Labour stressed that while the reduction is a commendable short-term solution, a sustained and predictable policy approach will be crucial to stabilising fuel prices and improving the livelihoods of citizens over the long term.
