The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Sanitation Court has reiterated that open defecation continues to pose a significant public health risk. The Assembly emphasized that this practice not only exposes residents to diseases but also contributes to environmental pollution and hampers efforts to maintain a clean and healthy city.
This warning follows the conviction of three individuals by the AMA Sanitation Court for various sanitation violations, including open defecation and illegal waste dumping. Florence Kuukyi, head of the AMA’s Environmental Health Officers, assured that sanitation offenders would continue to face prosecution as a deterrent to others who ignore the Assembly’s sanitation regulations.
Residents were urged to refrain from open defecation and disposing of waste in unauthorized areas. The AMA warned that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted without exception.
The public was also reminded to use approved toilet facilities and dispose of waste only at designated points. The AMA stressed that improving sanitation in Accra requires the collective effort of all residents.
The Assembly remains dedicated to enforcing sanitation laws to enhance cleanliness, safeguard public health, and restore discipline within the city.
