Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the Assin South Member of Parliament and Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, has criticized President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for reneging on their promise to criminalize LGBTQ practices.

In a social media post on Tuesday, March 31, Rev. Ntim Fordjour accused the NDC of misleading Ghanaians during their 2021 campaign by heavily promoting the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. The bill, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ practices and their promotion, was presented as a key part of the party’s agenda.

“After deceiving the public for votes, President Mahama and the NDC have now shamelessly denounced the LGBTQ bill, claiming it is no longer a priority due to the country’s basic needs,” he said.

The MP raised concerns about the timing of this shift, questioning whether the NDC had addressed the country’s basic needs during their 2021-2024 tenure, especially after allegedly using the LGBTQ issue as a tool to secure votes.

“Didn’t they promise to introduce a government-sponsored bill to address LGBTQ? What changed? It feels like a scam!” he added.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour’s remarks reflect growing frustration among some lawmakers and sections of the public who feel that the NDC is abandoning its campaign promises. He accused the party of using the LGBTQ issue as a political weapon rather than treating it as a genuine legislative priority.

The Assin South MP has called on the government to clarify its position, urging that national issues should not overshadow the commitments made during the campaign, particularly on contentious social matters like the LGBTQ legislation.
