The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has issued a stern warning to individuals who engage in siphoning fuel from accident scenes involving fuel tankers.
Tameklo stated that the NPA is collaborating with the Police to track down and prosecute those caught on camera stealing fuel. He stressed that not only is the act illegal, but it also poses a significant risk of explosion and loss of life.
“Whenever there’s a tanker accident, some people rush to the scene with gallons to puncture holes and siphon the fuel. This is pure theft, but more dangerously, the attempt to puncture the tank can lead to an explosion, which could result in a fatal disaster,” Tameklo explained.
He made these remarks during a monitoring visit by Parliament’s Energy Committee to the NPA on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
Tameklo appealed to the media to help raise awareness, urging the public to stay away from tanker accidents. “We want to use your platform to educate people that when you see a tanker accident, do not approach it, do not try to collect fuel. This is an invitation to death,” he said.
The NPA has announced that it will be collecting video footage from accident scenes and providing it to the Ghana Police to identify and arrest perpetrators. Tameklo highlighted that certain communities, especially from Nsawam to Kumasi, have been known to have gangs involved in such illegal activities. He added that the Police would be monitoring these areas closely to ensure arrests and prosecution.
“People need to understand the gravity of the situation. Fuel theft from accident scenes is not only a crime, but it also endangers lives. We are working with the Police to ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” Tameklo concluded.
