Iran in Talks with FIFA to Relocate World Cup Matches to Mexico

The Iran Football Federation has entered discussions with FIFA over a possible relocation of its matches at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing security concerns.

According to officials, Iran is requesting that its group-stage games, originally scheduled to be played in the United States, be moved to Mexico instead. The tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is set to be the first World Cup staged across three nations.

The request comes amid rising geopolitical tensions, with Iranian authorities expressing concerns about the safety and security of their players, officials, and supporters if they are required to travel to the U.S. As a result, the federation is pushing for its matches to be reassigned to venues in Mexico, where they believe conditions may be more favorable.

While talks are ongoing, FIFA has yet to make any official decision on the matter. Tournament fixtures remain unchanged for now, and Iran’s matches are still scheduled to take place in U.S. host cities.

The development introduces a layer of uncertainty ahead of the global showpiece, as any adjustment to match venues could have wider implications for scheduling, logistics, and tournament planning.

Should the request be denied, reports suggest Iran could consider more drastic options, including withdrawing from the competition  a move that would mark a significant and unprecedented disruption to the tournament.

For now, all eyes remain on FIFA as it weighs its options in what is shaping up to be one of the most politically sensitive issues ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
