The High Court has granted a GH₵30 million bail to Frederick Kumi, known as Abu Trica, with two sureties, marking a pivotal moment in his ongoing extradition battle. The court’s decision, which was confirmed on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, by his lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, comes after months of failed attempts by the defence to secure his release while challenging the legal foundation of the extradition proceedings.

Abu Trica, a Ghanaian social media influencer and businessman, was arrested on December 11, 2025, in a joint operation involving Ghanaian security forces and U.S. law enforcement. He is accused of being part of an international cybercrime syndicate responsible for romance scams that defrauded elderly victims in the U.S. of more than $8 million. According to U.S. prosecutors, Abu Trica faces serious charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy, both of which could lead to a 20-year prison sentence if convicted.

Investigations suggest that the syndicate used fake identities, aided by artificial intelligence, to deceive victims into sending money under various pretenses. After his arrest, Abu Trica was arraigned in the Gbese District Court in Accra, which started the extradition process after the U.S. requested his transfer to face trial in the United States.

Though two co-accused individuals, Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo, were cleared of charges after investigations found no evidence against them, the withdrawal of these charges formed a central part of Abu Trica’s legal defence. His legal team argued that the removal of his alleged co-conspirators weakened the case against him, prompting multiple applications to quash the proceedings and halt the extradition process.

Despite these efforts, earlier bail applications were unsuccessful, and Abu Trica remained in custody as the legal battle continued. The case has drawn significant attention, especially due to Abu Trica’s high-profile social media presence and his lavish lifestyle, which many have linked to the alleged fraud. Public opinion on the case has been divided, with some calling for his release while others insist on the importance of due process and accountability.

The recent High Court decision to grant bail is seen as a turning point, providing Abu Trica with temporary freedom as his legal team continues to challenge the extradition process. However, legal experts caution that the bail ruling does not resolve the extradition case and expect the proceedings to continue, with conditions such as reporting requirements and possible travel restrictions shaping the next stages of the case.
