The Ministry of Health has given assurance to the Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) and protesting nurses and midwives that measures are being put in place to address delays in the payment of salary arrears.

This follows threats of a nationwide withdrawal of services by junior doctors beginning Tuesday, October 7, 2025, after months of unpaid salaries, delayed postings, and what they describe as unfair treatment. The assurance also comes days after a demonstration by unpaid nurses and midwives on Thursday, October 2, demanding the release of salary arrears.

According to the aggrieved group, more than 7,000 nurses and midwives have worked for nearly 10 months without pay despite formal recruitment.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, October 3, Ministry of Health spokesperson Tony Goodman revealed that the delays were due to rushed recruitments without proper financial clearance during the previous administration. He explained that while some pharmacists and medical officers have since received their arrears, others — including house officers — are still awaiting payment.

Mr. Goodman further assured that Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, is working to clear all outstanding arrears. He noted that new financial clearances are being processed to regularise salaries and prevent future delays.

“The Ministry is committed to resolving this issue. As of yesterday, we know those who have been paid and those who are yet to be paid. Everyone affected will be sorted out,” he stated.
