GIS officer killed, another injured in armed attack at checkpoint

A late-night armed attack has left a Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer dead and another seriously injured at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality, North East Region.

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on officers at the checkpoint.

Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII) Rafiq Mohammed reportedly died instantly after sustaining fatal gunshot wounds, while his colleague AICOII Oppong Daniel suffered injuries to the jaw and back. He is currently receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.

Police investigators recovered multiple AK-47 shell casings and a GIS service rifle at the scene. A joint security team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, was swiftly deployed.

The motive for the attack remains unclear, but security officials have intensified surveillance in the area as investigations continue.
