The Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has called on the government to have open discussions with cocoa farmers about the current challenges in the sector.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Thursday, he said farmers are aware of the difficulties but expect transparency from authorities.
“The cocoa farmer is now agreeing that there are challenges; however, the government should come clean that this is the situation.
“So let us bear the brunt now, and when things improve, we will all come together and enjoy. I think that should be the narrative,” he stated.
His comments come at a time when concerns have been raised about liquidity issues affecting payments within the cocoa sector.
Meanwhile, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced emergency steps to address delays in payments to cocoa farmers.
“We have just concluded a lengthy cabinet meeting, which was an emergency session that discussed the cocoa sector and matters arising there,” he told the press.
“At the end, deciive measures were agreed upon regarding expedited payments to cocoa farmers and the implementation of the most drastic reforms in the cocoa sector,” he added
