Government to End Teacher Licensure Exams, Launch Housing and Decentralisation Plans – Hon Haruna Iddirisu
The Education Minister, Mr. Iddrisu, has announced that the teacher licensure exam will be phased out and integrated into final-year training at colleges and universities. Special exams will be held only for certain past graduates, including some from the University of Ghana.
Mr. Iddrisu raised concerns about declining professional standards and stressed the need for ongoing teacher development, better motivation, and improved working conditions. Teachers accepting rural postings will benefit from a 20% incentive.
The government is also rolling out the Teacher Dabre initiative, aiming to provide 50,000 housing units for educators through joint funding from the government and District Assemblies.
In a move to decentralise education governance, the government is considering allowing district assemblies to recruit teachers locally, supported by an increased allocation of the District Assemblies Common Fund, with 1% dedicated to education. The policy is expected to reshape teacher recruitment and improve local accountability.
