Ghana plans to pursue compensation for citizens who lost properties, businesses, and investments during recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Speaking to returning evacuees, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the government is finalising legal measures to recover losses and urged affected individuals to provide documentation of damaged or abandoned assets.

“Government will ensure compensation for properties and investments, including those acquired with life savings,” Ablakwa said, adding that detailed records, ownership documents, and evidence are needed to strengthen the case.

He confirmed that President John Mahama has instructed officials to escalate the matter to the African Union, where Ghana will press for justice and accountability for affected nationals.
