The Ghana Education Service (GES) has instructed all staff and students at the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School to vacate the premises after a tragic building collapse on the school’s compound that resulted in multiple casualties.
GES Director-General, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, made the announcement following a security briefing at the school. He emphasized that the GES, in collaboration with regional and national teams, would assess the safety of the remaining structures on the site.

“We will work with the estate department to evaluate the safety of the school’s buildings. If any structures are found unsafe, we will advise students to avoid those areas,” Prof. Davis stated during an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.
He further cautioned that no students should return to the school until all safety issues have been resolved.
The building that collapsed was an incomplete 3-storey classroom block, which fell on the evening of Sunday, March 29, 2026. The building had been used by a local church for evening worship services, and several congregants were trapped in the rubble.
A total of 23 people, including three minors, were trapped under the debris. While 20 individuals were successfully rescued and taken to the hospital, three others—two females and one male—lost their lives.
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, with officials working to determine the factors that led to this unfortunate incident.
