Fuel Tanker Explosion at Potsin Junction Causes Fire and Traffic Chaos, No Casualties Reported
A fuel tanker caught fire early Tuesday morning at Potsin Junction in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region, causing significant disruption to traffic along the Kasoa-Cape Coast highway.
The incident, which occurred around 5:30 a.m. on March 17, 2026, involved a tanker traveling from Accra towards the Central Region. According to reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle as it approached a section of the road under construction. The tanker overturned and exploded, sparking a massive fire that quickly spread to a nearby house and a local chop bar.

Thankfully, no casualties have been reported. Eyewitnesses say the driver managed to escape just moments before the explosion. Workers at the chop bar, who had started preparing meals as early as 3:00 a.m., also fled the area in time. The chop bar’s owner, who has been in business since 1983, expressed deep regret over the loss of his livelihood in the fire.
Emergency response teams from the Apam and Kasoa Fire Stations, supported by a private water tanker, worked swiftly to bring the blaze under control. Firefighters successfully extinguished the flames, which had engulfed both the tanker and the adjoining house.
The road construction at Potsin Junction has been described as a challenging section for drivers, with some areas posing risks. Authorities from the Ghana National Fire Service, NADMO, and the Ghana Police Service were on-site to manage the aftermath, clear the wreckage, and restore order.
Traffic along the busy highway was severely affected by the incident, but no further injuries or fatalities have been reported.
