Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, has revealed that 1,000 tickets have been secured in advance for supporters of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the tournament as one of the most expensive ever for fans.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, June 1, Kofi Adams said supporting Ghana at the World Cup will be particularly challenging because the competition is being hosted across three countries — Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

According to him, the geographical spread of the tournament, coupled with the high cost of tickets, has created significant logistical and financial difficulties for supporters.

“It is really nightmarish and a difficult one. This is the first time we are trying that. For us as a country, this is the first time we are playing a World Cup in that zone,” he said.

The Minister noted that Ghana did not participate in the 1994 World Cup hosted by the United States and therefore has no previous experience managing supporters for a tournament in North America.

He explained that FIFA’s advance ticket sales provided Ghana with an opportunity to secure tickets before prices increased significantly.

“Luckily for us, we managed and planned very well and effectively. We ordered for 1,000. I believe that that is what has saved the situation because if we were waiting till now, it would have cost us huge sums of money to even get those number of tickets,” Kofi Adams stated.

He clarified that the 1,000 tickets are part of a broader effort to ensure Ghanaian supporters are represented at the tournament.

According to him, the Ghana Football Association and several other organisations have also secured tickets and are making arrangements to support Ghanaians who wish to attend the matches.

“I wouldn’t say only a thousand. The FA itself has secured some tickets. We have other organisations that also have secured tickets. They are all sponsoring Ghanaians to be able to get in there,” he said.

The Minister expressed confidence that more than 1,000 Ghanaian supporters will eventually attend the tournament, thanks to the combined efforts of various stakeholders.

His comments come after President John Dramani Mahama announced that the government would provide match tickets for Ghanaians living abroad who wish to support the Black Stars during the World Cup.

The President explained that while government would not be able to fully sponsor large groups travelling from Ghana because of the high costs involved, tickets have been secured for Ghanaian communities in host cities to enable them attend the matches and support the national team.

The Black Stars will compete in Group L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they are scheduled to face Panama, England and Croatia.
