The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has strongly condemned the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the re-arrest of former National Food and Buffer Stock Company CEO, Abdul-Wahab Hanan Aludiba, and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni, following the discontinuation of charges against them by the Attorney-General.

The couple was re-arrested on Tuesday, May 5, shortly after the Attorney-General withdrew the case against them and three others at the High Court.

Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem Sai, explained on Facebook that the charges were dropped “following the discovery of fresh evidence,” which would “afford each of the accused persons a fair and more speedy trial in accordance with the constitution.”

Reacting to the development on May 6, 2026, Afenyo-Markin described the re-arrest as “unwarranted” and “needless,” noting that it followed the collapse of the initial prosecution. He highlighted that Abdul-Wahab and the others had been on trial for about a year, but the case began to unravel during a Case Management Conference when objections from Abdul-Wahab’s lawyers were upheld by the court.

He added that the prosecution’s attempts to introduce fresh witness statements without the court’s permission were rejected, forcing the Attorney-General to withdraw all charges.

The Effutu MP questioned EOCO’s decision to re-arrest the couple immediately after the charges were dropped, calling it “very shameful, reprehensible and unworthy of a healthy democracy like Ghana’s.” He also alleged that the suspects have been denied bail and access to their lawyers, despite having previously been granted bail by the court.

Afenyo-Markin accused the Attorney-General and state agencies of exploiting law enforcement processes for political persecution, particularly against opposition members.

“The law enforcement machinery should address actual wrongdoing in accordance with due process, not serve as a propaganda tool for the government by targeting opposition leaders,” he stated, criticizing what he sees as attempts to sustain the government’s anti-corruption narrative tied to the Buffer Stock case.

He called on EOCO and the Attorney-General to release Abdul-Wahab and his wife immediately, warning that such actions undermine Ghana’s democratic principles and the rule of law.

“I call on EOCO and the Attorney-General to release Hanan Abdul-Wahab and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni immediately,” he wrote.

Afenyo-Markin further urged EOCO Executive Director Raymond Archer to ensure that the institution operates strictly within the law, stressing that “this impunity must stop” and cautioning against turning state agencies into “rogue outfits for harassing and torturing innocent citizens extra-judicially.”
