Residents and motorists in Ayanfuri in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region are raising alarm over what they describe as an impending flooding disaster caused by the blockage of natural waterways, choked gutters, and ongoing construction activities within the community.

They are appealing to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Isaac Nsiah, to intervene immediately before the situation worsens, especially as the rainy season intensifies.

According to residents, the construction of a fuel station and the accumulation of waste in drainage channels have significantly obstructed the free flow of water through major gutters and waterways in the town.

The situation, they say, has already begun affecting road users, with portions of some roads becoming difficult to access whenever it rains.

They fear that if urgent measures are not taken, heavy downpours could lead to severe flooding, destruction of property, and disruption of economic activities in the area.

Motorists who ply the route have also expressed concern, warning that stagnant water and blocked drains could weaken sections of the road and pose danger to commuters and pedestrians.

The Unit Committee Chairperson for Ayanfuri, Madam Doris Appiah Boadi, strongly condemned the blockage of the waterways and road network, describing the development as a serious threat to lives and property.

According to her, community leaders and residents have made several efforts to address the issue and engage the persons responsible, but all attempts have yielded no positive results.

Madam Doris Appiah Boadi noted that the community has consistently advocated for the protection of drainage channels and access roads to prevent flooding, but the situation continues to deteriorate.

She therefore called on the Upper Denkyira West District Assembly and the District Chief Executive, Hon.Isaac Nsiah, to urgently inspect the affected areas and ensure that all blocked gutters and waterways are cleared to restore the natural flow of water.

She stressed that immediate intervention is necessary to avert a potential disaster, particularly at a time when rainfall activities are increasing across the region.

Residents are hopeful that authorities will respond swiftly to their concerns to prevent loss of lives, destruction of property, and the recurrence of flooding incidents that have affected many communities during previous rainy seasons.
