Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has urged Ghanaians to unite behind new Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz as the national team gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With expectations high, Gyan emphasized that unity, patience, and tactical discipline will be vital if Ghana is to make a significant impact on football’s biggest stage.

The Black Stars’ all-time top scorer acknowledged the challenge Queiroz faces, particularly given the limited time to fully implement his strategies ahead of the tournament. Nevertheless, Gyan insists the Portuguese tactician deserves the full support of the nation as he works to rebuild confidence and steer the team toward success.

In an interview with 3Sports, Gyan said, “We have a coach whose time is limited. We have to give him hope and support to qualify.”

Gyan also highlighted one of the Black Stars’ pressing concerns: defensive vulnerabilities. While the team has demonstrated attacking flair in recent matches, recurring defensive lapses have left them exposed against strong opponents.

“We should be more defensively sound, not just to concede fewer goals but to build a foundation for other aspects of the game. If we don’t fix our defence, opponents can penetrate easily, and right now, it feels like we are conceding in every game,” Gyan explained.

Drawing on lessons from Morocco’s historic run to the semifinals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and Ghana’s memorable campaign in 2010, Gyan stressed the importance of defensive discipline in tournament football. He believes a solid defensive structure can provide the platform Ghana needs to compete against elite nations.

“I’m not part of the technical team, but from my experience, being defensively sound—as Morocco did in Qatar and as we did in 2010—will help the team immensely,” he added.

As the countdown to the 2026 World Cup continues, Gyan’s message is expected to resonate with fans eager to see the Black Stars return to their best. With a new coach at the helm and renewed optimism around the squad, hope remains that Ghana can once again make the nation proud on the global stage.
