Agyemang-Badu: Ayew Recall Should Be an Honour, Not an Obligation

Former Ghana international footballer Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has said it would be an honour if veteran forward Andre Ayew, also a former Black Stars captain, is recalled to the Ghana national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but stressed that such a decision should not be considered mandatory.

The debate over Ayew’s potential return has intensified in recent weeks, particularly following his January transfer to Dutch club NAC Breda. The 36-year-old has appeared in nine matches for the club, scoring once as they fight to remain in the Dutch top flight.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Agyemang-Badu said, “I don’t think it’s compulsory, but if the country wants to honour former footballers, I will support it. It’s a privilege.” He added that recognising players who have made significant contributions to the national team would be a meaningful gesture.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance. Drawn in Group L, Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

As part of preparations in North America, Ghana will hold a training camp in March with friendly matches against Austria and Germany, followed by warm-up games against Mexico in May and Wales on June 2.

After group-stage exits at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2022 FIFA World Cup, Ghana will be hoping for a stronger performance in 2026. Head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce the final squad on June 1.
