Just in : Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings Elected Second Vice-President of Pan-African Parliament

By: Emmanuel Austin Baah
Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle and daughter of former Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings, has been elected Second Vice-President of the Pan-African Parliament following a decisive vote.
Dr Agyeman-Rawlings secured 131 votes, comfortably defeating her opponent, who polled 51 votes, in a keenly contested election held during the Parliament’s sitting. Her victory marks a significant milestone not only in her political career but also for Ghana’s growing influence within continental governance structures.
The Pan-African Parliament, an organ of the African Union, plays a crucial advisory and legislative role aimed at promoting democratic principles, good governance and integration across member states. As Second Vice-President, Dr Agyeman-Rawlings will be part of the Bureau responsible for steering the affairs of the Parliament and shaping policy discussions on key issues affecting the continent.
Her election has been widely welcomed by political observers, with many noting her experience in governance, international relations and public service. She has served on various parliamentary committees and has been an advocate for youth empowerment, healthcare improvement and women’s participation in leadership.
The development is seen as a boost for Ghana’s diplomatic standing in Africa, reinforcing the country’s longstanding commitment to Pan-African ideals—values strongly associated with her late father’s legacy.
Dr Agyeman-Rawlings is expected to bring renewed energy to the role as the Pan-African Parliament continues its push towards greater legislative authority and deeper continental integration.
