Kwesi Kwarteng, former spokesperson for the Ministry of Education Ghana, has criticised the government’s handling of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on recent actions by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), Kwarteng stated that arresting foreign nationals, particularly Chinese citizens involved in illegal mining, is a routine measure carried out by successive governments.
According to him, such actions fall short of the expectations set by the current administration, which had promised a more decisive and lasting solution to the galamsey menace.
He argued that while arrests are necessary, they do not address the root causes of illegal mining.
Kwarteng’s remarks add to the ongoing national conversation on how best to tackle galamsey, an issue that continues to pose serious environmental and economic challenges in Ghana.
