The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has emphasized that the Community Service Bill is a significant step toward reforming Ghana’s criminal justice system. He highlighted the bill’s potential to alleviate the issue of overcrowding in prisons and focus on rehabilitation.

The bill introduces community service as an alternative to imprisonment for minor offences, which is especially crucial given that Ghana’s prisons are currently operating at 35% above capacity.

Structured around 7 key thematic areas and 66 sections, the bill lays out a clear framework for implementation. Offenders will be required to work between 4 to 8 hours per day, for a maximum period of 6 months, with the bill applying to crimes punishable by imprisonment for 3 years or less.
