A fuel tanker accident along the Kumasi-Accra highway, near the Breku Forest, resulted in the spillage of thousands of litres of diesel, causing significant safety concerns. However, swift emergency response efforts prevented a major disaster.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, around 9:12 a.m., close to the Pra River. A DAF XF tanker, carrying 45,000 litres of diesel, suffered damage to its bulk, causing a breach in its structure and resulting in the loss of approximately 11,000 litres of fuel onto the surrounding area.

The accident took place on a critical stretch of the highway, heightening the risk for motorists and nearby communities. Despite the significant spillage, the incident caused only minor injuries, with two individuals requiring hospital treatment. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), led by Assistant Station Officer (AStnO) Owusu-Ansah, responded swiftly to the scene. Given the highly flammable nature of diesel, emergency crews acted quickly to cool the tanker with water and foam, while they also “blanketed” the spilled fuel to prevent ignition. Their quick and effective response helped to minimize the risk of a fire.

Approximately 34,000 litres of the diesel were successfully salvaged, preventing further loss. The accident briefly disrupted traffic along the busy highway, but coordinated efforts by emergency responders and other agencies ensured that the tanker was safely removed, allowing for the restoration of the free flow of traffic.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
