Lordina Foundation Renovates and Equips Anyima Health Centre to Boost Maternal and Child Healthcare
The Lordina Foundation has successfully renovated and equipped the Anyima Health Centre in the Kintampo South District, Bono East Region, with the goal of improving maternal and child healthcare services in the area. The facility was officially commissioned by Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, the Founder and President of the Lordina Foundation, who handed it over to the local community.
This project marks a significant milestone for the Foundation, bringing its total number of renovated and newly constructed health facilities across the country to six. Previous renovations have included maternity and children’s wards in regions such as Bole in the Savannah Region, Nkoranza South and Bodom in Bono East, and Asukawkaw in Oti. The Foundation has also renovated and expanded the Adabraka Health Centre in Accra and the Hohoe Zongo Health Centre in the Volta Region, providing them with vital medical equipment.

During the commissioning ceremony, Mrs. Mahama expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Nana Saa Gyamfuaa II, the Queenmother of Anyima, whose advocacy and commitment played a key role in the renovation of the health centre. Mrs. Mahama also revealed a personal connection to the area, noting that Jema-Ampoma, a nearby community, is the hometown of her late mother, Abena Gyamfua.
The Foundation has made improving maternal and child healthcare a top priority in its ongoing work, particularly in light of the current statistics on Ghana’s maternal and infant mortality rates. With an estimated maternal mortality rate of nearly 300 deaths per 100,000 live births and an infant mortality rate of 32 per 1,000 live births, the Lordina Foundation aims to address these challenges by increasing access to timely, quality healthcare. Many of these deaths are preventable, often due to long distances expectant mothers must travel to access care or because some healthcare facilities lack essential equipment.

The newly renovated Anyima Health Centre is designed to serve over 3,000 residents of Anyima and neighbouring towns, including Amoma, Apesika, and Jema. The facility now boasts a comprehensive array of services, including an Out-Patient Department (OPD), consulting rooms, examination rooms, a delivery room, a labour ward, a children’s ward, and separate male and female wards. Additional units include an adolescent centre, laboratory, dispensary, emergency room, and offices for medical staff.
Equipped with essential medical supplies, the Anyima Health Centre is now better positioned to provide quality healthcare. Among the new equipment are hospital beds, examination beds, an electric obstetric bed, an infant incubator, a phototherapy unit for infants, an ultrasound system, a digital electrocardiogram (ECG) machine, oxygen equipment, delivery sets, and neonatal care devices.
This upgrade is expected to significantly reduce the burden on pregnant women and ill residents who previously had to travel long distances for medical care. Newborns in the community will now have immediate access to professional medical attention, improving health outcomes for the next generation.
As part of the ongoing health improvements, former President John Dramani Mahama is set to launch the Primary Health Care Programme, which will offer free healthcare services at centres like Anyima Health Centre. This initiative aims to increase healthcare utilization, promote early disease detection, reduce healthcare costs for families, and foster a healthier, more productive population.
Mrs. Mahama called on health workers at the centre to provide care with dignity and compassion. She also encouraged the people of Anyima to take ownership of the facility, ensure its proper maintenance, and fully utilize the services it offers. She appealed to local chiefs and community leaders to safeguard the facility for future generations.
In her closing remarks, Mrs. Mahama expressed her sincere appreciation to the donor partners of the Lordina Foundation for their invaluable support and acknowledged the dedication of the Foundation’s management and staff in making this project a reality.
