The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to disconnect electricity supply to government agencies that fail to pay their power bills.

The directive forms part of efforts by the government to address the growing debts within Ghana’s energy sector and improve revenue collection in the power distribution system.

According to the minister, several Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) owe the Electricity Company of Ghana huge sums of money in unpaid electricity bills, a situation that is affecting the company’s ability to operate efficiently and meet its financial obligations to power producers.

He stressed that state institutions must not be treated differently from other consumers when it comes to paying for electricity and warned that defaulting agencies could face disconnection if they fail to settle their debts.

Mr. Jinapor noted that ensuring prompt payment of electricity bills by government institutions will help improve the financial stability of the energy sector and support the continuous supply of power across the country.

The minister, however, indicated that essential services such as key health facilities and some critical national security installations may be considered under special arrangements, although they are still expected to meet their payment obligations.

The directive is expected to push public institutions to prioritise the payment of utility bills as the government intensifies efforts to strengthen Ghana’s power sector.
