Former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, has regained her freedom after the State discontinued its attempt to keep her in custody pending an appeal to the Supreme Court.
The Court of Appeal, on Wednesday, August 12, struck out the Attorney-General’s application for a stay of execution after the State informed the court of its decision to withdraw.
The Republic filed its notice of withdrawal on August 10. Counsel for the State, Hilda Craig, led by Winifred Sarpong, confirmed the position when the matter came before the court.
The move paved the way for Madam Tamakloe-Attionu’s release, following the Court of Appeal’s earlier decision to overturn her conviction, nullify the 10-year prison sentence, and acquit and discharge her.
The Attorney-General had filed the stay application after the appellate court’s ruling, arguing that the order was necessary to preserve the effect of the judgment while the State pursued an appeal before the Supreme Court.
The application was heard on July 31, 2026, with the court reserving its ruling for a later date.
At Wednesday’s sitting, counsel for Mrs. Tamakloe-Attionu, Sidney Antonio, acknowledged receipt of the State’s notice but argued that the Attorney-General should have sought the court’s leave before withdrawing the application.
The court took note of the objection but observed that the respondent did not oppose the withdrawal. It subsequently struck out the application as withdrawn.
“With the State’s withdrawal, there is no longer any application before the Court of Appeal seeking to suspend the effect of its decision acquitting and discharging Mrs. Tamakloe-Attionu.”
The State has, however, appealed the Court of Appeal’s decision to the Supreme Court.
