You Chose to Serve, Not as High Commissioner'” Bagbin tells Baba Jamal

Baba Jamal M. Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was officially sworn in as the new Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East following his victory in the recent by-election. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Tuesday, March 10, in Parliament, with Speaker Alban Bagbin administering the oath of office.

Jamal’s re-entry into Parliament follows the vacancy left by the passing of the former MP for the constituency. He resigned his post as Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria to contest the NDC’s parliamentary primary, which he won amid controversy surrounding allegations of vote-buying. The primary election on February 7, 2026, had attracted significant political attention due to these allegations.

In his remarks after administering the oath, Speaker Bagbin told Baba Jamal, “You voluntarily offered yourself to serve the good people of Ayawaso East. During your campaign, you made it clear that you wanted to serve them as a Member of Parliament.” The Speaker further emphasized, “You are now here to serve Ghana, not as a High Commissioner. I will hold you accountable to the good people of Ayawaso East. You are like a son to me, and I will make sure you stay true to your commitment.”

Before taking up his ambassadorial role, Jamal previously served as the Member of Parliament for Akwatia in the Eastern Region from 2009 to 2013.
