The Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Apaak, has announced a 20% salary top-up for teachers who accept postings to rural and underserved communities, part of the government’s push to reduce inequalities in Ghana’s education system.
Speaking during a courtesy call with top BECE awardees, Dr. Apaak said the incentive is part of the Teacher Dabre Programme, which encourages educators to work in hard-to-reach areas. Beneficiary teachers will also receive housing support to make rural assignments more manageable.
“The President has a programme that rewards teachers willing to teach in rural areas. They will get 20% extra on their gross salary as motivation,” he explained. Dr. Apaak noted that the initiative, first announced by President John Dramani Mahama during the State of the Nation Address, demonstrates the administration’s commitment to giving all pupils equal access to quality education.
