Kojo Oppong Nkrumah Sponsors Bill to Limit Finance Minister’s Project Funding Powers

Ofoase-Ayirebi MP, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has introduced a Private Member’s Bill to amend the Public Financial Management Act. The bill seeks to prevent the Finance Minister from funding projects not included in the national development plan, aiming to enhance fiscal discipline and ensure public funds are directed toward long-term development goals.

Oppong Nkrumah emphasized that the bill is about prioritizing national interests and transparency over political gains. Supporters believe the bill will reduce wasteful spending, while critics argue it could limit the minister’s ability to respond flexibly to urgent needs.

The bill is still under discussion in Parliament, and its passage could reshape how Ghana manages public finances and development priorities.
